[...] His drawing process is grounded in the simultaneity of sun, moon, telescope, eye, body, hand, pencil and paper – in other words, in the unity of far and near. And in fact, it is not only in his approach that Lang differs from Galileo but also in the question he thereby raises. Lang’s interest is not driven by an attempt to achieve a faithful representation of the moon in a scientific sense; for him the moon plays only an indirect role. Instead Lang is concerned more with the sensory capacity that allows us to behold the moon: the process of seeing whose very invisibility is perpetually calling for something that can be seen – such as the moon.
